AMSE Olaitan Aderemi Balogun (JP, MPIC), Head of Diocese of the USA National Diocese, lived a life shaped by discipline, leadership and a steady commitment to serving others. From a modest home in Ebute Metta, Lagos, to his calling in North America, he carried the same sense of duty that marked him as a schoolboy.
Those who knew him remember a man of quiet strength, firm principle and deep faith. This is the story of his journey.
I. His Beginning in Nigeria
Olaitan Aderemi Balogun was born on June 20, 1962, in Ebute Metta, Lagos. His parents were the late Pa Joshua Adeyemi Balogun and Mrs. Abeke Omotunde Balogun, and he was the fourth of their five children.
He began his education at Apostolic Church Primary School, Cemetery Street, Ebute Metta, from 1968 to 1974, and went on to Apostolic Church Grammar School, Ketu, for his secondary education from 1974 to 1980. There his leadership stood out, and he was appointed Head Boy. Even as a young man, he showed the discipline, responsibility and devotion to service that would define his life.
From 1981 to 1984, he attended the Nigerian Defence Academy, where his character was deepened and his dedication to duty strengthened. He then worked for a time in banking, at the Tinubu Square Branch of the Bank of Credit and Commerce International. In 1990, he travelled to Canada to begin a new chapter of his life.
His early years laid the foundation for all that followed: a humble beginning, a sound education, natural leadership and an unwavering commitment to growth.
II. From Canada to the United States
In Canada, he found a spiritual home at Brigmham Parish, where he was a member from 1992 to 1994. In July 1994, he travelled with Baba Aro to Chicago for the Bi-annual Convention at St. Michael Parish — a journey that would shape the rest of his life.
After the convention, he returned to Boston, Massachusetts. In time, he came back to St. Michael Parish, seeking a place to settle, and was eventually led to Oshoffa Parish.
III. Service in the Church & the USA Diocese
From Oshoffa Parish, he was posted to Indianapolis as Shepherd-in-Charge — his first charge as a shepherd of souls. He later returned to Chicago to serve as Shepherd of Chicago 1 Parish, and from there stepped out in faith to start Rehoboth Parish. His leadership was recognised with his appointment as a State Supervisor.
When the USA Diocese broke up during the CTC period, he was entrusted with responsibility as Regional for Region B. In 2022, he was promoted Head of Diocese as the pioneer head of the USA National Diocese, rising to the rank of Assistant Most Superior Evangelist. He led the Diocese faithfully until his passing on September 2, 2026.
IV. Honours, Family & Legacy
He became a Jerusalem Pilgrim (JP) in 2024, fulfilling a cherished Christian aspiration to visit the Holy Places in Israel, the cradle of Christianity. In 2022, upon his promotion as pioneer Head of the USA National Diocese, he became an automatic Member of the Pastor-in-Council (MPIC).
Despite the frailty brought on by his illness, he travelled home to Nigeria to visit his extended family. He passed away in Lagos on September 2, 2026, unable to return to the embrace of his darling wife, his beloved children and his USA National Diocese family.
His remains were flown back to the United States of America, so that Celestial members who knew him on this side of the world could pay their last respects, regardless of diocesan affiliation. He is survived by his loving wife, Iyanuoluwa Balogun (née Nunayan), his son Samuel Balogun, his daughter Elizabeth, extended relatives and Celestial Church of Christ members.
He will be remembered for his humility, his discipline and his lifelong dedication to God, family and service.
Rest in peace forever, beloved. Amen.
